Dan L. Abfalter
Daniel L. Abfalter, senior vice president of human resources, leads MV’s human resource management efforts. The scope of his responsibilities include labor relations and field human resources; drug and alcohol testing program compliance; compensation and benefits oversight; policy and procedure development; as well as employee recruiting, hiring, and retention.
Since joining MV, Dan has developed and implemented several programs that promote long-term organizational sustainability and stability. This includes a company succession plan, a job requisitioning/ position control program, and an overhaul of the company’s performance management system.
Abfalter is an accomplished individual who has diverse experience in retail and service-based industries, and a record of accomplishment in reducing employee turnover, improving corporate communications, establishing career goal-oriented programs, and fiscal savings.
Prior to joining MV in the winter of 2009, Abfalter served as a senior vice president for 99 Cents Only Stores. In less than nine months, Abfalter reduced employee turnover by 30 percent by instituting a combination of policy improvements (such as enhancements to the benefits offerings) and morale-based events (such as Town Hall Meetings and company picnics).
During his four-year tenure as the executive vice president of human resources for 24 Hour Fitness, Abfalter was critical to improving corporate communications. He launched the $1.2B health chain’s first company magazine and e-newsletter, and worked with company leadership to develop training elements for the company’s annual convention. By redesigning the organization’s health plans as a self-insured program, Abfalter saved the organization more than $4 million. This initiative was coupled with an overall health and wellness program that promoted healthy lifestyles while positively impacting the company’s risk pool. Abfalter’s twelve-year tenure at Raley's Stores, a retail grocery chain, is a testament to his labor relations experience. Here, he worked with operations teams in over 150 stores in three states to negotiate Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) with favorable terms, and deliver those agreements on budget.
Leading the procurement and implementation of the PeopleSoft HRIS system, Abfalter saved the organization $350,000 annually in administrative costs. Further, efforts to reduce turnover with an improved employee selection program successfully saved the company nearly $9 million annually, with a reduction from 36 percent to 17 percent turnover over a five-year period.
Abfalter has an MA in Human Resources/Organizational Development and is a certified Senior Professional in Human Resources; a Certified Toastmaster; has a Certificate in Instructional Design; and multiple certificates in Employment Law.
